Do Historic Buildings Require More Frequent Inspections?
Historic buildings often require more frequent slab inspections than new construction due to their age, unique construction methods and vulnerability to deterioration. Limited documentation and changing usage demands make regular inspections crucial to ensure preservation efforts align with structural needs. Bond Façade Services specializes in slab inspections for historic buildings. Specialized knowledge is necessary to accurately evaluate the integrity of the foundation and slab in historic buildings.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Technology
GPR is a non-destructive testing method and uses electromagnetic waves to create a subsurface image of the concrete. During a slab inspection, GPR identifies the presence of hidden objects such as pipes, conduits or rebar, which may not be visible on the surface. This information is crucial for ensuring that future modifications or renovations do not compromise the building's stability. GPR technology adds an extra layer of precision and insight to the slab inspection process. We utilize this technology to identify potential issues and make informed decisions for repair strategies.
Crack Mapping and Monitoring
During crack mapping, our inspectors use specialized tools to visually map and record the location, length, width and pattern of cracks observed on the surface of the slab. Cracks are caused by various factors, such as settlement, structural movement, shrinkage or external loads. We use additional tools, such as inclinometers and tiltmeters, to measure any tilting or movement of the slab. After inception, we analyze the data to determine the extent of the cracks’ development and the potential risk they pose to the foundation. Regular slab inspections are crucial for early detection and the prevention of a compromised structure.
Terra Cotta Restoration: Milwaukee's Cudahy Tower
925 E. Wells St,
Milwaukee, WI 53202
Bond Façade Services helped maintain the notable Cudahy Tower apartment building in downtown Milwaukee, across the street from the Milwaukee Art Museum. Recognizable by its' white glaze brick and terra cotta ornamentation, it is a staple on the Milwaukee lakefront. Developed in 1907 by the historical Milwaukee figure Patrick Cudahy, the Cudahy Tower apartment building is one of the city's most notable structures from its time. Later, his two sons added an adjacent apartment tower, further enhancing its significance.
The Cudahy Tower boasts a beautiful neoclassical architectural style that utilizes its large scale and simplicity to grab the attention of passing Milwaukee residents as well as making it feel like home to the many that occupy it's units. Bond Façade Services’ historic building restoration aided in maintaining the building’s beauty.
